Weed Eater – Weed Wackers and String Trimmers

A weed eater, weed whacker, string trimmer or whatever you refer to it by is a very handy tool for the do-it-yourselfer homeowner who takes care of their own yard rather than having to have a yard worker drop by every few weeks to take care of the yard for them. Rather than having to drag out the lawn mower and other gardening tools to get the job done the weed eater makes quick work of maintaining your lawn and garden. However their are a various types of weed eaters or string trimmers and they have their advantages as well as their dis-advantages.

Gas weed eaters

Gas powered weed eaters are the most versatile and most professionals who have to use them all day long prefer these types because they’re portable and you can take them where ever you’re able to go. You don’t need a power outlet or portable generator nearby, and they tend to have the best balance between power and portability. The down side is that you need to have a can of gas with you for refueling, the smell of gas and the toxic fumes, and the noise – your neighbors will really know when you’re doing yard work. Depending on the model it can be a little difficult to start and may be prone to stalling, but overall a good combination of power and portability.

Electric weed eaters

Electric powered weed eaters tend to have a nice balance of power and noise level as they are much quieter and provide a consistent level of power unlike cordless types which has a tendency to be powerful when fully charged, but weakens as the battery begins to get low. The downside is having to have a power source or portable generator nearby, as well as having to drag the cord along as you go. When using these types of corded weed eaters work going away from the power source so you don’t have to constantly mess with the cord.

Cordless weed eaters

Cordless weed eaters can have a good balance in portability, power and ease of use. They act like a gas powered unit because of it’s portability, but is also quiet like an corded electric weed eater. The downside is that they lack the power of the gas and corded units, they may be somewhat comparable in power when the battery is fresh, but as it’s used the power will gradually decline until it needs to be recharged. However, many homeowners with smaller yards find that this type is the most convenient and fits their needs satisfactorily. Homeowners with larger yards should consider an extra battery, or purchasing other types of lawn equipment such as edgers, hedge trimmers, blowers, etc. from the same manufacturer that uses the same type of batteries so you can swap them out when it’s time to recharge the battery.
